The EU project PRECODE, funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme, has launched a call for applications for 14 PhD positions on pancreatic cancer<\/strong>. One of them will be at the University of Verona, within the research team led by Dr Vincenzo Corbo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call for applications is published on the PRECODE website<\/a> and applications will be accepted until 2\/12\/2019 23:00 (Central Europe Time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s PRECODE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PRECODE (PancREatic Cancer OrganoiDs rEsearch)<\/strong> is a network<\/a> involving 24 universities, SMEs and patient advocate groups from 9 countries, who have designed a specific training and research programme<\/strong> for the next generation of creative and innovative researchers in pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Innovative Training Programme is a Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Action funded by the\nEuropean Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRECODE is focused on the use of organoids in the investigation on pancreatic cancer, combined with cutting edge molecular biology techniques.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organoids can be viewed as \u201cmicro-organs\u201d which can\nrecapitulate the organization and the function of one organ. As micro-organs,\norganoids can be used to reduce animal experiments, in accordance with the 3Rs principles.\nIndeed, researchers are required to replace animal experiments whenever\npossible, to reduce them, or at least to refine and improve the methods and\ntreatment of the animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organoids from pancreatic cancer will help us to learn which\ndrugs might help in the therapy of this terrible disease. They can be isolated\nfrom a variety of clinical sources with minimal material needed. This makes\nthem a perfect tool for precision medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sequencing, metabolomics and high throughput in vitro\nexperiments to deduct the best possible drug combination fit hand in glove with\nthis approach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who can apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Candidates must\nmeet the following requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Education Level<\/strong>: They must have a Master\nDegree or equivalent degree in Life Sciences that grants access to PhD\nprogrammes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Research Experiences<\/strong>: At the time of recruitment, they must not have already a doctoral degreeand they must have less than 4 years (full-time equivalent) of experience in research. The experience in research is calculated from the date when they obtained their first degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. International\nmobility<\/strong>: They are required to move from one country to another one when\ntaking up the appointment. More precisely, researchers must not have resided or\ncarried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their\nhost organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to\ntheir recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. English language<\/strong>:\nThey must be able to fluent in written and spoken English, to the get the full\nbenefit from the network training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Applications\nmust be submitted through the on-line form<\/a> on the PRECODE recruitment webpage.\nEach candidate can apply for a maximum\nof three specific positions<\/strong> and list their order of preference <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The application should include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. an up-to-date CV i<\/a>n europass form<\/a><\/li>
  2. a cover letter that describes the applicant\u2019s motivation to apply to the Program (max. 1 page), and<\/li>
  3. the contact details of at least two referees. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    One of the available PRECODE positions will be at the Department of Diagnostics and Public Health of the University of Verona<\/strong> and University Hospital of Verona<\/strong>, within the group of Dr. Vincenzo Corbo<\/a> (vincenzo.corbo@univr.it<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The University Hospital of Verona is a well-recognized referral center\nfor the treatment and the study of pancreatic diseases, and the hosting\ninstitution will grant the candidate access to the materials and know-how\nnecessary to conduct the research activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The laboratory studies the molecular determinants of pancreatic cancer\nprogression and molecular subtype specification. Our overarching goal is to\nbetter understand how cellular plasticity and intratumor heterogeneity\ncontributes to progression of the disease and therapeutic resistance. We use\nexperimental models of the disease, ranging from monolayer cell cultures to\nmouse models, and perturbation analysis to identify key processes in pancreatic\ncancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The successful applicant will learn how to isolate, cultivate and\ncharacterize both patient-derived organoids (PODs) and cancer-associated\nfibroblasts (CAFs). He or She will establish PDOs representative of the\ndifferent molecular subtypes of pancreatic cancer and study their interaction\nwith CAFs. He\/She will subject both PDOs and coculture of PDOs and CAFs to\npharmacological treatment to establish resistance\/sensitivity of the culture.\nTo understand mechanisms of resistance to a given compound, and specifically\nthe contribution of cell plasticity to this phenomenon, the candidate\nwill avail of single cell sequencing analysis organoids.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
