Maja Nisevic: In Verona I felt at home INVITE Blog / INVITE experience

As the Maria Skłodowska-Curie fellow under the INVITE project frame at the University of Verona, I started my PhD studies on 1 October 2018.  The Department of Law at the University of Verona has been my academic home. The support I have received from my supervisor prof Stefano Troiano has directly contributed to the final product and who I am today as a person and researcher.

During my research, I was lucky to be in touch with inspiring people who have helped me becoming a better researcher and extended my understanding of the law. Notably, at the University of Verona, I have been surrounded by fun people. I was lucky! Above all, my colleagues made me feel at home, and my research journey has been possible because I had not felt alone. Additionally, as the INVITE PhD student, I have met other great INVITE PhD students. Therefore, the INVITE project was indeed fruitful because it opened a professional door and the door of new friendships.

Although the decision to move to Verona has afforded me great opportunities, because the decision came through the encouragement I received during my initial PhD studies at the University of Vienna, such a great opportunity came at the moment when I did not know what to do with my life. However, the hugely positive experience that I got as the INVITE PhD student at the University of Verona opened up the academic route, and I became absolutely aware of what I was going to do with myself in the future.

Because I got a place at the University of Verona in the INVITE project frame, I had a fantastic chance to become part of a worldwide academic society. I was researching at one of the prestigious universities in the UK and the Netherlands.

Moreover,  the researcher position at the University of Verona allowed me to network with Universities in the UK, Netherlands, Turkey, China, Switzerland, Belgium, US, Israel, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, etc. Additionally, I had a chance to present my research outcomes in Hong Kong, Tilburg, Istanbul, Banja Luka, London, Vienna, Bayreuth, Verona, Leiden, Zurich, Rijeka and most importantly, to follow research in the field of Law and Technology.

I also published my articles in an international and domestic journals. Over the night, therefore, I have become a researcher who collaborates with different universities inside and outside the European Union, and publish scientific articles in a recognized scientific journals.

In the end, the crown of my research journey seems to be my current position. Thankfully to the opportunity I got as an INVITE PhD student, I have become a postdoctoral researcher at one of the best and prestigious universities worldwide, such as KU Leuven. Indeed, KU Leuven became my new academic home, but I will always be thanking the University of Verona, my old academic home, for everything I am today.
